Stepper Motor Ratings Now in Unipolar

posted on 24/06/2008 by Dave Rigotti

To avoid confusion, we’ve now started displaying unipolar and bipolar ratings for our stepper motors.  We’ve also reduced the price of the #23-305-DS8A and the #23-205-DS8 by $1, respectively.

The inductance is the same for bipolar parallel and unipolar connections, but the current differs depending on the connection type. Is the current rating of 3A for the Nema 23 405/425ozin motors for unipolar or bipolar parallel mode? Can you please tell me the appropriate current ratings on the motor for both bipolar parallel and unipolar usage respectively? (I’m guessing the specs below are for unipolar mode, since that’s how your HobbyCNC board uses the drives, but I wanted to clarify, so in bipolar parallel the current would be somewhat higher.) Thanks!

    Unipolar rating is 4.2V 3A 305ozin
    Bipolar parallel rating is 3.0V 4.2A 425ozin
    Bipolar series rating is 5.9V 2.12A 425ozin
